Every few years, headlines say a Mars mission is “imminent.” Then the date slips. Part of that is engineering. Part of it is clocks you cannot negotiate with.
Earth and Mars only line up for an efficient one-way trip about once every 26 months. Miss the window, and the next cheap ride is more than two years away. That rhythm — not press releases — sets the tempo for cargo plans, crew dreams, and the entire settlement campaign.

So even a perfect November 2026 departure implies a 2027 arrival, not a 2026 landing.

SpaceX’s public Mars materials emphasize the same ~26-month transfer-window cadence and the need to launch often enough inside those windows to move serious mass. Starship’s architecture also depends on orbital refueling (tanker flights topping up a Mars-bound ship in low Earth orbit) before departure — so “ready for Mars” means more than a single successful test flight.
As of the wording on SpaceX’s Mars page (checked for this article), Starship cargo flights to the Martian surface for research, development, and exploratory missions start no earlier than 2028, listed at $100 million per metric ton, with payload details via SpaceX sales. That is a commercial earliest-date floor, not a guaranteed launch date, and not the same thing as “using the 2026 window.”

Does missing a window cancel a Mars program?
No. It usually pushes the next efficient attempt more than two years out and can force redesign of mass, tankers, or manifest.
Is the 2026 window “the last chance”?
No. Windows keep coming. 2026 is simply the near-term opportunity people are watching right now.
Will SpaceX launch to Mars in 2026?
Do not treat that as confirmed. SpaceX’s current public cargo offer is no earlier than 2028. Watch official pages and demonstrated hardware, not recycled quotes.
Why not go when Mars is closest in the night sky?
Public close approaches are great for telescopes. Spacecraft care about departure energy and arrival speed over a multi-month cruise, which is a related but different optimization.
